Rule and Example Sequences

Rule-to-example Sequence

Blocks containing concepts are sequenced before blocks containing examples that teach the concepts. Rule-to-example allows the learner to use deductive reasoning to understand the concept.

Example-to-rule Sequence

Blocks containing examples are sequenced before blocks containing rules. Example-to-rule allows the learner to use inductive reasoning to understand the concept.

Example

In the Operations with Numbers case study, the Count from 10 to 120 module teaches learner how to count from 20 to 120, by demonstrating examples of how two and three digit numbers are written as they are counted. The module following that, Place Value for Base-10 Numbers, provides rules that formalize the pattern in the counting examples.
